Vaccine Titre Tests for Dogs: What They Show and What They Cannot Replace
An India-focused guide to canine vaccine antibody titre testing covering distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, puppy response, booster decisions, rabies limits and boarding policies.
What a titre measures
A titre is an antibody measurement. Detectable antibody shows that the immune system has responded to vaccination or infection, but immunity also involves memory and cell-mediated responses that the test does not fully measure.
AAHA cautions that a titre is not a simple universal forecast of protection or susceptibility; disease outcome also depends on the dog, pathogen and exposure.
Where titre testing is most useful
| Situation | What testing can help answer | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| After puppy series | Did the puppy develop detectable core-virus antibody? | Maternal antibody timing matters |
| Previous vaccine reaction | Is core-virus antibody still detectable? | Does not replace all future vaccines |
| Unknown core status | Is there evidence of previous immunity? | A negative result usually supports vaccination |
| Booster discussion | Can core-virus revaccination be individualised? | Routine testing is not necessary for every dog |
Distemper, parvovirus and adenovirus
WSAVA and AAHA recognise serology as clinically meaningful for the major core viruses. After maternal antibodies have disappeared, detectable antibody generally indicates a prior immune response.
A negative result can reflect susceptibility, test limitations or lack of response and should be interpreted by the veterinarian.
What titres cannot replace
- Rabies vaccination and legal documentation
- Leptospirosis vaccination
- Bordetella or canine-influenza facility requirements
- Clinical examination before vaccination
- Cold-chain and vaccine-record verification
- Outbreak-control vaccination in high-risk shelters
Rabies is different
AAHA states that antibody correlates of protection have not been established for routine rabies decision-making and serology is not considered a substitute for vaccination.
India remains rabies-endemic, so maintaining current rabies vaccination protects the dog, family and community and supports post-bite decision-making.
Boarding and facility policies
A boarding facility may accept core-virus titres as additional information, but it can still require current rabies, leptospirosis and respiratory vaccines.
Facilities must use a written policy rather than deciding case by case at check-in.
India-specific limitations
- Limited access to validated quantitative laboratories
- Sample transport and turnaround time
- Confusion between titre and diagnostic infection tests
- Rabies legal and public-health obligations
- Variable acceptance by airlines and boarding facilities
- Cost compared with standard booster vaccination
A practical decision pathway
- Review the complete vaccine record.
- Identify the exact disease being tested.
- Ask why testing is being considered.
- Use a validated laboratory or in-clinic test.
- Interpret positive and negative results with the veterinarian.
- Maintain noncore and rabies protection according to risk and law.
