How lokivetmab works

Lokivetmab is a caninised monoclonal antibody that binds canine IL-31, reducing one major itch signal. It is given by veterinary injection and is not the same type of drug as a steroid, ciclosporin or JAK inhibitor.

The US package insert identifies allergic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis as licensed uses. National labels may differ.

Efficacy and duration

Randomised clinical trials found meaningful itch reduction compared with placebo and comparable clinical benefit to ciclosporin in dogs with atopic dermatitis.

A 2024 long-term observational study reported clinical success in many treated dogs, while a minority experienced gastrointestinal signs or lethargy. Individual duration and response vary.

Important: A dog that improves after Cytopoint can still have an untreated ear infection, pyoderma or food allergy. Reduced scratching is not proof that the cause has been solved.

Who may benefit

Cytopoint can be useful for dogs with allergic pruritus, including patients where daily tablets are difficult or when the veterinarian wants a targeted anti-itch option.

A dog with rapidly progressive infection, severe parasite burden or unexplained systemic illness needs diagnosis and stabilisation rather than an injection-only plan.
