Can I Feed My Dog Tea or Chai?

The Indian-home answer
In India, chai is emotion. But for dogs, chai is not comfort food. Dogs should not be given tea, milk tea, masala chai, black tea, green tea, iced tea, or tea-based drinks.
Tea contains caffeine. Chai may also contain sugar, milk, ginger, cardamom, clove, cinnamon, and sometimes strong masala. Some ingredients may be tolerated in tiny food amounts under guidance, but chai as a drink is unnecessary and unsafe.
Why tea is not dog food
Caffeine is the main concern. Dogs can be sensitive to stimulants, and excessive caffeine can affect the heart and nervous system. Sweetened chai also adds sugar. Milk may cause stomach upset in lactose-sensitive dogs. Masala can irritate digestion.
Giving chai regularly can encourage bad habits: begging from cups, licking tables, and accepting human drinks. It also teaches children and guests that sharing human beverages is okay.
Common tea exposures at home
Dogs may drink from unattended cups, lick spilled chai, chew used tea bags, or steal biscuits dipped in tea. Used tea bags and loose tea leaves can contain concentrated caffeine compared with a few drops of diluted chai.
Keep cups, tea bags, and dustbins away from dogs. After tea time, clear low tables quickly.
What to do if your dog drank tea
If the dog had a small lick of diluted chai, observe and prevent repeat access. If the dog drank a cup, ate tea bags/leaves, had strong black tea, or shows vomiting, restlessness, panting, tremors, fast heartbeat, weakness, or unusual behaviour, call a vet.
Give your vet the dog’s weight, amount consumed, type of tea, time, and whether it contained sugar, milk, spices, chocolate, or artificial sweetener.
Better alternatives
Fresh water is enough. If you want to include your dog in tea time, give a dog-safe chew or treat nearby instead of sharing chai. For puppies, senior dogs, and sensitive-stomach dogs, avoid experimenting with human drinks.
