Can I Feed My Dog Pomegranate?

It is better to avoid feeding pomegranate to dogs as a regular treat. A few arils may not always cause a crisis, but the seeds and tannin-rich fruit can up

By Dogsvilla Team ·

Pomegranate is healthy for humans, but dogs do not need it. The hard seeds and high fiber/tannin content can irritate the digestive system, especially in small dogs or dogs with sensitive stomachs.

How to Serve It Safely

  • If your dog accidentally eats a few arils, observe for vomiting or loose motion.
  • Offer safer fruits like apple without seeds, banana, watermelon without seeds/rind, or papaya in small portions.
  • Ask your vet before using any pomegranate supplement.

When to Avoid It

  • Avoid pomegranate for dogs with pancreatitis, gastritis, constipation, or loose stools.
  • Do not feed the peel or white membrane.
  • Avoid packaged pomegranate juice because of sugar and concentration.

Portion Guide

Dogsvilla recommendation: do not make this a planned treat. Choose safer fruits instead.

Dogsvilla Feeding Rule for Indian Homes

Keep human foods plain and small. Do not add salt, sugar, chilli, garam masala, chaat masala, onion, garlic, fried tadka, sauces, or packaged flavours. New foods should be introduced one at a time so you can notice vomiting, itching, gas, loose stool, or refusal.
