Can Dogs Eat Peaches? A Himachal-To-Kashmir Summer Treat, Done Safely
Peaches from Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir hit Indian markets each summer. Here
Peaches (aadu) from Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir show up in Indian markets for a short window every summer, roughly May to August, which makes them more of a seasonal treat than a year-round staple for most Indian dogs — but they're genuinely good for your dog when in season.
Benefits
- Vitamin A and C for immunity and eye health.
- Fibre that supports regular digestion.
- 89% water content, useful for hydration during peak Indian summer heat when heatstroke risk is high.
The real danger: the pit
The stone contains amygdalin, which converts to cyanide in the gut. A swallowed pit is also a serious choking and intestinal blockage risk, particularly for small breeds and puppies. Always slice the peach and remove the pit completely before offering any to your dog — don't let them go after a whole fruit off a plate or tree.
Pesticide residue
Conventionally grown peaches carry high pesticide residue in most testing worldwide, and India's residue monitoring for fruit sold in open markets is inconsistent. Wash peaches thoroughly, or buy from organic/pesticide-tested suppliers where available, especially if feeding regularly.
Out of season? Try these instead
- Watermelon (seedless, rind removed) — abundant and cheap through the hottest months.
- Ripe papaya (no seeds or skin) — available year-round and gentle on digestion.
- Ripe mango pulp in small amounts — high in sugar, so treat it as an occasional treat rather than a daily one.
